The Answer to "The Question"

The Answer to "The Question"

You know they're not "just a pet" - they're a very special part of your family, but
have you ever thought about what would happen to your furry or feathered
family member if something happened to you?

For example, what would happen to your pet...

  • If you were away on a daytrip and car trouble or unexpected travel delays                           made it impossible for you to return home as planned?
  • If you were involved in an accident or experienced a sudden illness and had                        to be hospitalized for a few days or maybe even a few weeks?
  • If you became disabled or had to be placed in a long-term care facility?
  • If you should die?

No doubt, you've made some provisions for your family and loved ones if
something should happen to you, but what about those who depend on you for
absolutely everything - your pets?  Don't they deserve to be protected, too?
Whether you had to be away for a day, a week, six months or a lifetime -
wouldn't you like to have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your
pets would continue to receive the same type of loving care that you've always
provided for them - even if you can't be there?

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, there are generally 3 ways you can plan for
the care of your pet in the event that something should happen to you:  One
option is the statutory pet trust
, which allows you to make a statement in
your Will, such as "I leave $7,500.00 in trust for the care of my dog, Buddy and
my cat, Misty."
Another option is a pet protection contract, in which you
make arrangements with someone who agrees to take care of your pets in the
event of your incapacity or death.  However, neither the statutory pet trust
nor, in most cases, a pet protection contract, provide sufficient
assurance that the funds you leave for the care of your pets will
actually be used for that purpose, nor that the instructions you leave
for their care will even be followed.  Worse yet, it may take several
months before your Will is probated.

So, where does that leave your pets during that time?  Possibly at the mercy of
people who may not truly care about them or who may not have the means to
take care of them.  The awful truth is that every year, thousands of "Buddys"
and "Mistys" end up in shelters after the death of their Owners, where according
to the ASPCA, a shocking 60% of dogs and 70% of cats are euthanized.  That is
why, in many cases, reliance on statutory pet trusts and pet contracts can result
in disaster - giving the Pet Owner a false sense of security that his or her pet's
future is fully protected, when in fact, it is not.  The good news is - there is a
3rd option (the Answer to "The Question") that can help you avoid
probate and have the assurance you need that your pets will continue
to receive the loving care that they deserve - especially if you can't be
there:  the FurEver CareTM Life & Estate Management Plan
